Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who) plays Robert Mapplethorpe in this compelling biopic about arguably one of the most controversial photographers in American history. From the artist’s early days as best friend to Patti Smith, to his relationship with curator Sam Wagstaff, MAPPLETHORPE looks at the time when he was embracing his sexuality in the gay scene of 1970s New York during which he was finding his voice and vision as an artist. Accomplished documentary filmmaker (DIG!, We Live in Public) Ondi Timoner rekindles the excitement and tragedy of Mapplethorpe’s career and life as he electrified the contemporary art world and immortalized a generation ravaged by AIDS. ~ Provincetown Film Festival
