Vincenzo (the marvelous world weary Sergio Castellitto) is the soon to be redundant maintenance manager of a steel mill, whose blast furnace has been sold and is being shipped to a plant in China. Unfortunately, he realizes that the furnace has a serious technical flaw, which could cause a terrible accident if not rectified. Unable to get anyone to listen to him, he embarks on an unannounced trip to China, in the vain hope of finding the plant and persuading its owner to let him help repair the furnace. Engaging a reluctant young Chinese woman, who is beset with her own personal trials and tribulations, as his guide, Vincenzo's eyes are opened wide to the size, scale and gigantic extremes of living that exist in contemporary China. Renowned Italian maestro, Gianni Amelio follows up his acclaimed drama, Keys to the House, with this epic road movie of sorts, which is both powerful story telling and a rich spectacle. ~ The London Film Festival
