The plot of this film--three sisters reunite to care for their dying mother--has all the potential pitfalls of sentimental slosh and – miracle of miracles –rises above them to create art. Agnes returns to the bleak but beautiful Nova Scotia landscape of her youth and runs into the resistance of her two sisters. After all, isn’t Agnes a druggie and an alcoholic? Agnes insists on the past tense: she was all that and more. But she’s changed. And indeed she has. She becomes the rock on which the sisters build their future. Throw into this a touching mystery about the teenage girl who lives down the lane and the result is potent melodrama, perfectly acted and ably directed by first-timer Wiebke von Carolsfeld. You may cry. You will certainly laugh. ~ Nick Salerno
