A most unlikely protagonist, Sébastien is 20 years old with nothing going on in his life except a willingness to follow the rules. But when a serendipitous chain of events hands him a train ticket and set of instructions, clearly intended for someone else, he uncharacteristically decides to accept the challenge. What begins as a lark soon delivers him like an innocent lamb to the slaughter. Sébastien finds himself at the very brink of human decency, a place whose only inhabitants are the underbelly of society. Yet there is no turning back for our young hero; he must forge on with only two tools for survival: his luck and his wits. Ironically, his number may be up, and in this case, it's 13. Director Géla Babluani's hand is firmly at the throttle of this neo-noir thriller that may instantly rise to the rank of cult classic. Borrowing from cinematic traditions (Hitchcock is the first), 13 TZAMETI perfectly combines story and style to produce an explosive effect. It is superbly crafted with finely honed acting and writing, and the elegant black-and-white cinematography creates just the right atmosphere. This film's budget may be small, but its payoff is large. 13 TZAMETI is a satisfying adventure, building slowly, drawing us in, and ending with a white-knuckle ride into the surreal. ~ Sundance Film Festival

BABEL - AZ PREMIER/SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Country: Japan/Morocco/Mexico
Year: 2006

In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out – detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple's frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost – lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves – as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love. In this mesmerizing and emotional film, acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams, Amores Perros) achieves a range never before seen in his films, in which by making himself invisible, he penetrates the different cultures, shot in three continents, directing actors and non-actors in four languages and making the hyper-realistic world co-habitate with the vision of the world of the imaginary, where sound and music are the emotional narrators. This film brings back the ancient concept of BABEL and questions its modern day implications: the mistaken identities, misunderstandings and missed chances for communication that, though often unseen, drive our modern lives. Babel explores the nature of the barriers and misunderstandings that seem to separate mankind. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Kôji Yakusho lead an international ensemble of actors and non-professional actors from Morocco, Tijuana and Tokyo, who enrich Babel's take on cultural diversity and enhance its powerful remarks on cultural links and frontiers.

Director:
Darko Mitrevski

Runtime: 89 minutes

The premise is bizarre: what do you do if you have wrapped your dead granny in a carpet and someone steals the carpet?  Well, you follow the trail of the carpet all over the Balkans until you finally retrieve Granny.  Now what do you do with her body?  If the premise of BAL-CAN-CAN sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s based on an old folk tale with worldwide circulation. In Mitrevski’s film that folk tale is the linchpin for a shaggy dog story that begins as a comedy and ends as a surreal movie about the horror of war in the Balkans.  Those familiar with Balkan history will recognize the many characters as representatives of the many sovereign nations which were once a part of Yugoslavia.  But you don’t need that background to enjoy this film which wildly lurches from one climax to another.  BAL-CAN-CAN is one of the most original films of the past decade. In a polyglot of languages, Mitrevski tells a provocative and daring tale. ~ Nick Salerno

BEOWULF & GRENDEL
Director:

Sturla Gunnarsson
Country: Canada/Iceland/
United Kingdom
Year: 2005
Runtime: 103 minutes

This film was only a limited theatrical release in the U.S. Catch a rare opportunity to see it on the BIG screen.

Thoroughly updated using contemporary English, BEOWULF & GRENDEL nonetheless retains the full heraldic glory and mythical epic qualities that have inspired so many readers. The film tells the bloody tale of the warrior Beowulf's battle with Grendel, a great and murderous troll. As a young man, King Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgård), leader of the Danes, kills a troll but spares his son Grendel (Ingvar Sigurdsson). Now an adult, Grendel seeks to avenge the murder of his father and unleashes his wrath against the Danes. Unable to stop him, the Danes ask for the help of their Norse ally Beowulf (Gerard Butler), a battle-tried soldier in his own right. Out of allegiance to King Hrothgar, Beowulf leads a troop of warriors across the sea to rid a village of the marauding monster. However, Beowulf's attempts to fight the troll are thwarted when Grendel refuses to engage him in battle. Despite his seemingly savage nature, the troll is adhering to a strict code of retribution: his quarrel is not with Beowulf but with the Danes. When Beowulf meets Selma (Sarah Polley), a mysterious and sensuous witch, his understanding of revenge is further complicated and he begins to waver in his commitment to kill on behalf of King Hrothgar. BEOWULF & GRENDEL powerfully entwines themes of vengeance, loyalty and mercy. The film strips away the mask of the hero myth, leaving a raw and tangled tale that rings true through the centuries. ~ Toronto International Film Festival

A costume from this film will be on display in the auditorium before the screening. When an unmarried woman in 19th century Vietnam has a child, the village elders decree that she must die and that the child – a boy – be given to the river gods.  A major storm changes all that. Thereafter the life of Ly An is one of misery and little joy.  Those who actually decide her destiny are three brothers, two of whom gamble for the right to sleep with her.  Throughout her travails Ly An keeps her own counsel and survives with dignity, becoming the guiding force in the lives of all the men she encounters.  Not the least of these is her son who – as an adult – seeks to understand the mystery of his mother’s life.  The narrative is non-linear, turning round and round upon itself, until it reaches its end.  BRIDE OF SILENCE is exquisitely photographed.  The scenery is sensuous and almost palpable.  Here’s one film you won’t soon forget.  The directors – brother and sister – make an astounding film debut.  ~ Nick Salerno.

Sophiatown, South Africa, in the mid-50s: an interracial oasis of musicians, gangsters and hipsters; home to the likes of Henry Nxumalo (Taye Diggs), sportswriter for the magazine DRUM, and his friends, such as the charismatic young political activist Nelson Mandela. Nxumalo’s world revolves around the seductions of nightclub life—to the frustration of his otherwise adoring wife (beautifully portrayed by Moshidi Motshegwa). Everything changes when he volunteers for an undercover assignment as a farm laborer for a brutal white boss. His subsequent exposé of the appalling conditions he experiences projects him and the magazine – along with his editor and German photographer-sidekick, both white – into the front lines of the growing resistance to apartheid. Based on a real-life story, director Zola Maseko's impressive debut feature is a portrait of courage, interracial camaraderie and transcendence in adversity, superbly filtered through the tale of Nxumalo's transformation from hedonist to investigative journalist par excellence. ~ Mill Valley Film Festival

We first meet Rebecca (Natalie Portman) in a car. She is crying. She cries for a long time. Rebecca has hired a woman to drive her to the duty-free zone between Israel and Jordan where cars are traded, bought, and sold.  We get Rebecca’s story in bits and pieces.  She has broken up with her Israeli boyfriend and is looking for one of his friends, an American said to live in Jordan. But FREE ZONE is not about Rebecca and her man: it’s about her, the driver, and a third woman whom they pick up. It’s about how women survive in a part of the world always in crisis.  It’s the first Israeli film filmed in Jordan. Portman was born in Jerusalem.  If you haven’t seen a film by Gitai – one of the darlings of international film fests – FREE ZONE is a good place to start.  ~ Nick Salerno

FROM SUBWAY WITH LOVE (ROMÁN PRO ZENY)
Director: Filip Renc
Country: Czech Republic
Year: 2005
Runtime: 100 minutes
Czech with English subtitles
Laura and her mother Jana have the same problem: men.  Actually, Jana’s problems are more serious, so to speak: she can’t love a man who hates the Poles or who wears a ski jacket to a concert.  Laura’s problems are more conventional: she can’t make up her mind.  So what happens when Jana’s past becomes Laura’s present?  Great fun, that’s what. Throw in a grandmother whose only question is “Do you have a boyfriend yet?” a more than slightly unconventional best friend, and the women at the beauty salon and you’ve got a plot made for Desperate Housewives.  This Czech chick flick, based on a very popular Czech novel, was joyously received at the Cannes Film Festival. ~ Nick Salerno.

January 1922. With powerful forces of a new century pressing in around them, Danish explorer and scientist Knud Rasmussen visits the isolated camp of the great Iglulik shaman, Aua. For Rasmussen and his protégé, the young anthropologist Therkel Mathiassen, arriving at Aua's family camp is like falling into Paradise, an arctic Garden of Eden with an intoxicating mix of spiritual and physical vitality, joyful intelligence and exuberant generosity. What the Danes don't realize is Aua's temporary fortress of beauty and tranquility stands surrounded by the steamroller of the twentieth century – the introduction of Inuit-language Christian bibles, increasing dependence on foreign trade goods and the first police investigation of a murder of a white man – and that nomadic Inuit can't stay in one place even if there's nowhere safe to go.

LOOK BOTH WAYS
Director:
Sarah Watt
Country: Australia
Year: 2005
Runtime: 100 minutes
Awards: Australian Film Institute Award - Best Direction/Best Film/Best Screenplay/Best Supporting Actor, Brisbane International Film Festival - FIPRESCI Prize, Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards - Best Actor/Best Director/Best Editor/Best Film/Best Screenplay, IF Awards - Best Direction/Best Editing/Best Script, Toronto International Film Festival - Discovery Award
With LOOK BOTH WAYS, Australian filmmaker Sarah Watt joins the limited but exalted ranks of animators who have successfully graduated to live action (Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton). She extends the range of the mixed genre by using animation not for trickery but for plumbing the emotional depths of the female artist and male photojournalist who meet, not-cute, in her story. When cartoons intervene, they express grief and loss, fear of commitment and dreams of escape. Meanwhile, the couple, their friends, families, and exes stumble through a live-action life with lots of fate and a touch of free will. LOOK BOTH WAYS is at heart a tale of love and mortality, exploring with delicacy how we see life when haunted by death. And Watt has the sophisticated narrative skills to pull it off. When Brigitte Ikin (Jane Campion's producer) coaxed her into features, the faith was not misplaced: Look Both Ways is a dazzlingly energetic film that proves yet again that nothing is off limits to the down-under imagination. Watt's muscular tour de force goes for the jugular of both genders, energetically disassembling their emotional armatures while a sprightly musical soundtrack reassures us that silver linings may be found amid the storm clouds. Watt is a wonderfully original and talented filmmaker who is animated by a tenderness that goes beyond cinematic style. ~ San Francisco International Film Festival

MONGOLIAN PING PONG (LÛ CAO DI)
Director: Ning Hao
Country: China
Year: 2004
Runtime: 102 minutes
Mongolian with English subtitles
It starts innocently enough: a ping pong ball floats down a river in the Mongolian grasslands and is found by young Bilike (Hurichabilike). No one has even seen such an object.  Is it a magical pearl from heaven? A religious talisman? A nuisance? Or the national ball of China? Not even the monks know what it is or what to do with it. Bilike and his friends are determined to understand what the mysterious object is, why it was sent to their community, and to return it to its source. The resultant film is part comedy, part social and political satire, and part documentary.  For those who have seen none of the documentaries shot in that part of the world, MONGOLIAN PING PONG is likely to be an exhilarating journey into a natural world of unparalleled beauty. Fans of THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY will respond the most enthusiastically. ~ Nick Salerno.

ON THE SUNNY SIDE (NA PLANINCAH)
Director: Miha Hocevar
Country: Slovenia
Year: 2003
Runtime: 96 minutes
Slovenian with English subtitles
Two Bosnian boys – 11-year-old Sani and his teen brother Ado – have been orphaned by the Serbian bombing of Mostar. They've come to Ljubljana in Slovenia to stay with their aunt and uncle for what Sani thinks is a summer vacation but Ado knows that it is permanent. The film wastes no time on reopening old wounds but just follows the boys over the course of the summer. And what a summer! They both learn a bit about teen life, and adventures, and even some sex, in this witty, knowing, coming-of-age story that reminds us all of what we used to be as kids. ON THE SUNNY SIDE manages to be fresh, funny and touching all at the same time. It should take its place beside Lasse Hallstrom's classic MY LIFE AS A DOG. ~ Robert Glatzer

WONDROUS OBLIVION
Director:
Paul Morrison
Country: United Kingdom
Year: 2006
Runtime: 106 minutes
Awards: Boston Jewish Film Festival - Audience Award
“Heartwarming” is perhaps overused in describing films, but it’s certainly apt in this case.  In 1960’s England an unathletic young boy and his family bond with a Jamaican family which has moved into the neighborhood and built a cricket court in its backyard.  Many of the neighbors are horrified at this infiltration of their turf by a Black family, but young David seizes the opportunity to learn cricket skills from the skilled Dennis. As the bond between the two families grows, so do the problems.  The ending may surprise you.  Think of WONDROUS OBLIVION as this year’s BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM.  Though the film is sometimes strident in expressing its anti-racism theme, still the best word to describe it is, yep, heartwarming. ~ Nick Salerno
