Raukura, New Zealand, homeland to the Ngati Kaipuku, holds a harsh beauty. Twisted and gnarled by the elements that have shaped it; sea, wind and man, the earth forms a breathtaking landscape worn down to its core, inhabited by a rugged people with a proud past and a future under siege. After twenty years service in the Army, Captain Will Bastion is discharged from peacekeeping duty in the Balkans, and returns to Raukura for the first time in 18 years, to bury his father, the tribe's chief -- a leader whose mantle, by Maori tradition, Will must inherit. Estranged from his roots, Will is reluctant to fulfill the dictates of tribal tradition. His uncertainty is seized upon by the charismatic firebrand, Kahu, Will's younger brother and rebel leader of the tribe. Matters are further complicated by the arrival of Will's 17-year-old daughter, Ripeka, who is brimming with her own brand of rebellion. Openly flouting the government through their radical separatist views and dope-growing empire, Kahu and his cult have either seduced or intimidated everyone in the village. The stage is set for a showdown, pitting brother against brother as the forces of tradition, government authority and tribal pride; all collide in an action-packed saga of loyalty, betrayal, love and honor.
