Life Out of Balance Any small pocket of humanity constitutes a potential source for stories that bump into one another. "Grand Hotel" did it and so did "Pulp Fiction." Kryzsztof Kielowski did it on a gigantic scale with his masterwork "Dekalog." BROKEN HEARTS is another attempt at the same idea with a new wrinkle. The Mexican director, Rafael Montero, has used cinematography to aid the audience in exploring the swirling imbalance of big city human existence today. With camera movement, angular shots and even distortion, we are presented with money needs, parental needs, value needs, etc. As we watch, we see a story in the morning paper, a person from two doors away, a relative from Peoria--or us. The distortion of the camera work is correct. This is a
film not just of an apartment building in Mexico City, but of our life. Montero is a director to be watched because he is a man of ideas. (Synopsis by Fred Linch)
