The premise is bizarre: what do you do if you have wrapped your dead granny in a carpet and someone steals the carpet? Well, you follow the trail of the carpet all over the Balkans until you finally retrieve Granny. Now what do you do with her body? If the premise of BAL-CAN-CAN sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s based on an old folk tale with worldwide circulation. In Mitrevski’s film that folk tale is the linchpin for a shaggy dog story that begins as a comedy and ends as a surreal movie about the horror of war in the Balkans. Those familiar with Balkan history will recognize the many characters as representatives of the many sovereign nations which were once a part of Yugoslavia. But you don’t need that background to enjoy this film which wildly lurches from one climax to another. BAL-CAN-CAN is one of the most original films of the past decade. In a polyglot of languages, Mitrevski tells a provocative and daring tale. ~ Nick Salerno Principal Cast: Vlado Jovanovski, Adolfo Margiotta, Zvezda Producer: Darko Mitrevski, Alessandro Verdecchi, Gianluca Curti, Shows: Harkins Camelview 5 - Sunday, October 8 at 8:35pm and |
